    Divide By Zero Error when trying to bring up Netscape: The Following Information was given to me directly from a Supervisor at Netscape:
    "Before you do anything drastic, you should go into the Cache subdirectory of the Netscape directory and delete it. If there is something in there that is causing problems, this will take care of it. Netscape will re-create it upon restarting the program. If that doesn't take care of it, your next step would be to uninstall Netscape and reinstall it................Jamie"

    If a "Member" gets a No DNS Entry error message either on a MAC or PC.If they are connected and you have done all that you can think of, then it could be that the Server is busy because of peak times or the lines are loaded. I discovered this with a "Member". I pinged and ran a trace route on the IP address that was assigned by the server when she logged in and got"destination host unreachable and request time out". On call was notified but they said everything was fine, that the lines were loaded. I asked my supervisor, we checked Netscape for some answers and it said that if the Server is busy or lines are loaded you will get the DNS error message.....Bryan Parker

    From Scott Allen Huddy------- If the Member is using Netscape v3.0 or better....the default is set to enable SSL V3 security protocol. This keeps the user from accessing our "Change your password online page". They must go to Options | Security Preferences | and "uncheck" the SSL V3 box in the General Tab.-------------

    (From Mason Eike) Netscape.hst file-- located in the Navigator directory - a listing of the web sites you have visited since the file was created. People can look at the sites you've visited or you can look at where they've gone. Erasing the file will not harm the program, Navigator just creates a new one (you must be out of the program before erasing it).

    News.rc -- located in the Navigator News directory - a listing of newsgroups you've been to and a number for any documents you viewed. Much like the Netscape.hst file in that people can look at what newsgroups you've gone to or you can look where they've gone. Erasing the file will not harm the program, however, it erases the subscription list and you have to rebuild that list the next time (comparable to erasing your bookmark file and having to rebuild it). Instead of erasing the file, it's better to edit the file, deleting what you want and saving the rest.

    Cookies.txt -- located in the Navigator directory - a file used by some web sites to access information about you. Take a look at the file sometime to see which companies do it - common names are Disney, Microsoft, and Netscape. The next time you visit their site, their server will look for information in that file or place more information in it. Erasing the file will not harm the program, Navigator just creates a new file.

    For those customers that want to make their Win3.x Shiva PPP Dialer redial to get past busies and such so that they don't have to sit in front of the computer while it does so can follow these steps. This is from Netscape's homepage.

    ===================================

    The Shiva software that comes with Netscape Navigator Personal Edition (including DialUp Kit) for Windows 3.1 does not have any apparent methods of setting an automatic redial if it encounters a busy signal nor a way to set it to automatically reconnect if the line is dropped. The following is how to set this up.

    -Create a text file called shivappp.ini in the same directory as the dialer software

    -Create an [Options] section as shown:

    [Options]
    DialRetries=x; Set x equal to the number of times you want ShivaPPP to retry after a failure.

    -Create a [Reconnect] section in the same file as shown:

    [Reconnect]
    Enabled=Yes
    Automatic=Yes

    PROBLEM:

    If computer locks up during modem connection.

    DESCRIPTION: For Win3.x

    When "Other Windows Modem" is selected in the Account Setup Wizard, Netscape may lock up the computer when connecting with the dialer and Netscape is auto launched. It does not lock up when choosing Hayes Compatible or any other modem setting.

    SOLUTION:

    The solution to getting Netscape not to lock up is to run the command memmaker from a DOS prompt and get more conventional memory. Memmaker can raise memory available from 513K to 589K, which seems to make the difference on some systems.

    For more information on memmaker, go to a DOS prompt and type: > help memmaker       Thanks to Rizwan Haroon.

    More on this below.

    You should also check the windows temp file....do this by:

  • 1. shell to dos and type "set" and hit return
  • 2. look for the line that says "temp=c:/xxx" where xxx is the path
  • 3. go into windows file manager and delete all the "~.tmp" files listed
  • Thanks to Chad Bohannon.

    And still more......

    If the TEMP= or TMP= line reads C:/DOS, then type "DIR.TMP" in the DOS directory. This will give you a list of all TMP files in that directory. If there are some present, just type DEL *.TMP and they're gone.. If the TEMP= or TMP= line reads C:/WINDOWS/TEMP, then go ahead and remove all files and sub directories in said directory. Often, when installing programs, they'll create subdirectories with files in them.. they're useless and will not be used again after the installation is complete, but often are not deleted. If you're in the middle of a Windows session, expect to see TMP files in the afore mentioned directories... This should only be an issue if you have a gross number of temp files on the drive. Thanks to Lance.

    Windows 3.x--Dial In Driver Not Loaded

    A. Reinstall software. The following lines in the system.ini file were not installed in the [386Enh] section:

  • 1. device=c:/netscape/system/vntstimd.exe
  • 2. device=c:/netscape/system/vtcprac.386
  • 3. device=c:/netscape/system/pdwcomm.386
  • 4. device=c:/netscape/system/dial.386

    B. Member may have 2 drives. If they had a previous version of Netscape, the paths may be incorrect, and may need to be modified to reflect the correct pathname, i.e.:

  • 1. device=d:/netscape/system/vntstimd.exe
  • 2. device=d:/netscape/system/vtcprac.386
  • 3. device=d:/netscape/system/pdwcomm.386
  • 5. device=d:/netscape/system/dial.386

    C. Software may have installed into a previous ISP's directory. You may need to uninstall the other ISP's software, as well as our own Netscape, and reinstall.

  • 3. May have a corrupted TCP/IP or Dial-Up adapter.
  • 4. May have downloaded a different version of Netscape.
  • 5. May have more than one protocol in network settings. (Control Panel)

    I had a customer who was getting An error occurred while sending mail. The mailserver responded "User jeanne unknown. Please check the recepients and try again." Customer's ID was jeanneb. All mail settings were correct. I did everything I knew to do. Finally, Mason Eike supplied me with the answer. Under Options, Mail & News Preferences, Composition, she had this:

    She had left the 'b' out of her email address. Makes perfect sense to check here.............once you know the answer.

    Have Netscape wrap long lines in Email. In Netscape, go to File, New Mail Message, then select View in the menu and check Wrap long lines. This will automatically adjust line length to match the size to which the message window is set.

    Out Of Memory error while trying to access mail in Netscape using Win3.X.

    If the customer gets this while trying to acces their mail and they are using Win3.X and Netscape, try deleting their the inbox and inbox.snm. Also, tell them to save what's in their inboxes if they need to because it will be lost. Netscape will create new inboxes when its opened again.

    Thanks to Floyd Bunch.

    We've been getting numerous calls on the following error message: Error: Cannot find ISP.SCP when connecting to ISP. This is a script error. Here are work arounds for Win 95a and b.

    If the customer is using Win 95b then go to Dialup Networking, right click and go to properties. Then click the scripting tab and remove the path specified in the FILE field.

    If the customer is using Win 95a and they receive this error then the MS Dialup Scripting Tool is loaded on their PC. Here is the fix from the Netscape KB:

    1) Open...Start/Program Files/Accessories/Dial-up scripting tool
    2) Remove the value from the "File Name" text box
    3) Click Apply, and then Close
